New Brighton Village Green — A Space Handed Back to Community

In December, the New Brighton Village Green officially opened — and with it, a new chapter for the heart of Brighton Mall.

Delivered in partnership with the Greater New Brighton Community Group, the Village Green was always intended to be more than a physical upgrade. It represents years of advocacy, collaboration and belief in the future of New Brighton. From early concept thinking through to delivery, our role was to help shape a flexible civic space capable of hosting markets, performances, everyday gathering and spontaneous use — a place that feels both purposeful and open-ended.

What stood out most on opening day wasn’t the stage, the lawn, or the built elements — it was the people. Families, local businesses, performers and volunteers reclaiming space together.

Projects like this remind us that urban design is not about imposing form — it’s about enabling life. The Village Green now belongs to the community, and that is exactly how it should be.
